I spent this past weekend with Tony Robbins and a small group of people immersed in the energy and ideas of some of the most inspired and optimistic people on the planet.
Singularity University is rapidly becoming the place to go for people around the world who want to find out about emerging technologies in virtually every area of life.
This extraordinary program sponsored by Google, NASA, Autodesk and a number of other giants in technology and innovation, was created to bring industry executives and leaders up to speed with how emerging technologies are rapidly changing the world as we know it.
Weve Gone Exponential
We are now living in a world where technology is growing exponentially. This is a rather abstract statement, so Ill take a moment to explain what this really means…
To give you a sense of exponential growth, if you take 30 linear steps forward youll end up about 30 feet from where you are now. But if you take 30 exponential steps forward (1, 2, 4, 16, 32…) by your 30th step youll have travelled around the world 26 times!
Because computing power is developing exponentially rather than linearly, the speed of change is actually not a constant, its compounding!
Therefore, massive leaps are happening in virtually every industry right now which will change the world as we know it more dramatically than most of us can even imagine over the next few decades.
Are Our Brains Becoming Outdated?
One topic came up over and over at Singularity University throughout the weekend: Our brains have evolved over hundreds of thousands of years in a linear fashion and because we havent upgraded our hardware, we tend to imagine the future based on the recent past.
But the recent past in an exponentially changing world, is equivalent to hundreds of years in linear time!
Think about it. For hundreds of thousands of years humans have lived on this planet, most never venturing farther than a few days walk from where they were born and most never knowing much more about the world than what they learned from the elders in their village or hamlet.
The internet has only been around for 15 years, but now a teenager in Sub Saharan Africa with a cell phone has access to more information than the president of the United States had 25 years ago!
Five years ago there was no such thing as an Iphone. And 3D printers that create full scale objects on demand have only been around for…
Oh, you havent heard about 3D printing?
Well, its here and its about to change manufacturing forever. Take a look:
Within a decade most of us will have a 3D printer in our home. Well be able to order and print out a huge variety of products on demand, including tools, shoes, replacement parts and more.
Printers are even in development that can print out entire houses. Yes, houses.
And devices already exist that are printing human tissues for use in constructing replacement organs. Yes, replacement organs. In fifteen years, youll likely be able to order a new kidney printed out from your own stem cells.
But our brains are still hardwired for the linear world, for slow and steady change.
Therefore, there is a rapidly growing gap between the world as weve known it and the world thats emerging. This gap is going to create massive stress for a good deal of the population who is expecting the world to stay pretty much the same.
For those able to adapt however, the opportunities that are coming down the pipe are going to be extraordinary!
Can You Impact a Billion People?
Mark Zuckerburg, the founder of Facebook is about to. He had an idea for a simple service that would help college students connect, which is rapidly on its way to reaching a billion people.
If you want to impact humanity and do it in a really BIG way, then you were born in the right time to do it!
So what do you want to do? What is your highest purpose during your limited time on this planet?
According to Ray Kurzweil, the key to playing a really big game and impacting A LOT of people is going to be taking big bold actions. Big bold actions are going to require taking some risks though. And taking risks involves failure.
If youre not willing to take risks and youre not willing to fail, then youre not going to have very much impact.
In this new era of global connectivity if you
- Pay attention and take advantage of emerging technologies.
- Take risks.
- Stay optimistic even amidst your failures.
Then you have the opportunity to directly impact more people than at any other time in human history!
Upgrade Your Hardware
You cant run the latest computer software on a seven or eight year old laptop. If you want to use the latest software youve got to upgrade your system.
The same is now true for your brain as well — however the human brain hasnt had a hardware upgrade for a hundred and fifty thousand years!
Although synthetic biology is accelerating at a pace that is three times the speed of Moores Law, and nanotechnology is developing that allows miniature computerized devices to be installed in the human body (pacemakers have already been around for years but soon well have chips that literally back up our minds as we would our Imacs), there hasnt been a technology to actually upgrade the human nervous system until recently.
Its called Network Spinal Analysis (NSA), and it has emerged from what might seem like a very unlikely area of the health care sector – chiropractic.
Research through the USC Department of Engineering has linked this new method developed by Donny Epstein to a new class of complex nonlinear dynamic behavior, according to researcher Edmund Jonckheere Ph.D.
This new non-linear dynamic behavior is expressed through a predictable wave-form that moves through the spine and body, disrupting existing patterns and establishing new patterns through a process called spinal entrainment.
The research demonstrates that this wave process evolves predictably, and is consistent with a reorganization in the nervous system that fosters increased energy-efficiency and adaptability to the environment.
A study of over 2,800 patients receiving this care (conducted through the UC Irvine Medical College) showed that 76% of the patients receiving the care reported an approximate DOUBLING of their quality of life!
So, the tools already exist to upgrade your hardware and many, many more tools are on their way in the next decade. This is incredibly exciting for the future of humanity!
If you want to learn more about NSA or even experience a session to start upgrading your nervous system now, you can get details here.
Id love to hear your comments, feedbacks and questions!
