The practice and goals of yoga are varied. They range from improving health to experiencing higher states of consciousness in meditation, and achieving liberation from worldly suffering and the cycle of birth and death. Hatha Yoga is a particular system of Yoga that focuses on the purification of the physical body as leading to the purification of the mind or vital energy. Compared to the seated asana, or sitting meditation posture, Hatha Yoga marks the development of asanas into the full body ‘postures’ now in popular usage. Along with its many modern variations, Hatha is the style of Yoga that many people associate with the word “Yoga” today.
