The extension of the brain which exits the base of the skull through a hole (called the foramen magnum). The spinal cord functions primarily in the transmission of neural signals between the brain and the rest of the body, but also contains neural circuits that can independently control numerous reflexes and central pattern generators. The spinal cord is attached to the vertebrae at both ends of the spine via its covering, called the meninges.
