Also known as degenerative joint disease, osteoarthritis is a group of mechanical abnormalities involving degradation of joints. Symptoms can include joint pain, tenderness, stiffness, locking, and sometimes effusion. Mechanical stress on joints is thought to underly all osteoarthritis and misalignments of bones, mechanical injury, overweight, loss of strength in muscles supporting joints, and impairment of peripheral nerves can contribute to it.
