Neural networks that can endogenously (i.e., without rhythmic sensory or central input) produce rhythmic patterned outputs. Organisms must adapt their behavior to meet the needs of their internal and external environments. Central pattern generators, as part of the neural circuitry of an organism, can be modulated to adapt to the organisms needs and surroundings.
